Whangapoua

Information

This long white sandy beach is a popular surf spot and conservation area located on the northeast coast of the island.

The estuary runs through Okiwi basin to the southern end of the beach. There are incredible views of Hirakimata and Rakitu island.

Okiwi/Whangapoua DOC campground is located along the estuary and basin. The main stretch of beach can be accessed by driving along Mabey’s road (take the right turn as Okiwi school).

The SS Wairaapa grave walkway and site can be found at the Northern end of the beach. Head along the beach to Tapawai point and you’ll find the grave site surrounded by a white picket fence.

For accommodation close to this beach check out Shearers Quarters, located to the Northern end of the beach and a stones throw from the water.
