SUMMARY:Spectacular by Nature - Garden Tour 2024
DESCRIPTION:In 2024\, the Totara\, Kauri\, Rewa and Nikau Garden Tours will be on Saturday 30th of November. \nBookings have already opened on 1st May 2024. \nThis is a unique opportunity to view a variety of residential gardens on the Island. The guided tours will enable you to visit charming cottage gardens\, to see spectacular coastal panoramas and experience the hidden native flora and birdlife. The ticket includes tour transportation\, a scrumptious Morning Tea and a charming Devonshire Afternoon Tea. \nThe Garden Tour is a major fundraiser for the Great Barrier Island Community Health Trust\, enabling it to purchase equipment for use on the Island. The event involves many 100’s of hours of community volunteer time and energy and the participant feedback has been outstanding. It has become a very popular event\, national and international celebrities who have participated in the past tours\, quote that it is ‘a must-do event’ for every keen adventurous gardener. \nA previous special guest Russell Fransham comments\, \n“Thank you so much for persuading me to come over for the garden tour. I had the most wonderful weekend on the Barrier.. my first time on the island. \nThe gardens I saw were such a treat\, all different and all very personal expressions of their creators’ lives. The passion\, creativity and commitment were so inspiring. Its very clear that Great Barrier people know they are part of something very special. I came away feeling so welcomed into island life and so many of the people I met felt like old friends by the time I flew home. \nI’m still on a high and I’ll be back for more.”

SUMMARY:Aotea Kauri Survey - Community Info Session
DESCRIPTION:Aotea kauri survey to begin in Summer 2025/2026 \nA community meeting will be held at the Claris Conference Centre to discuss this project on Wednesday\, November 26\, at 5:00 p.m. \nA survey of kauri health will soon begin on Aotea\, Great Barrier Island\, to determine the extent of both\nthe soil-borne pathogen Phytophthora agathidicida\, the causal agent of kauri dieback disease\, and\nsymptomatic kauri. \nPhytophthora agathidicida was first detected on Aotea in 1972 and is current distribution on the island\nis patchy. It is not known to be present in the Northern area of Te Paparahi. DOC has conducted various\ntree health assessments and soil testing over the years. In 2020\, the Auckland Council conducted aerial\nsurveillance from helicopters\, followed by ground-truthing. \nThe survey is being done in partnership with the Department of Conservation (DOC) and Ngāti Rehua\nNgātiwai Ki Aotea Trust. It will include the forested area of Aotea\, encompassing Auckland Council\,\nPublic Conservation Land\, and contiguous private properties\, who will be contacted directly soon.\nTo understand kauri health at a population level across Aotea\, this project will combine mapping of the\nkauri population from aerial imagery and data from field surveys. Recent learnings from the 2021\nWaitākere Survey and 2024 Hūnua Survey will be used to inform the survey design. \nRandomly selected kauri totaling 540 will be surveyed for their health and have soil samples collected\nfor laboratory analysis. The random selection of 540 trees will give us a baseline prevalence of tree\nhealth and pathogen presence or absence at a landscape scale. This will create a cohort of monitored\ntrees that can be consistently re-measured to understand change in tree health. \nThis survey will inform future management decisions in kauri forests on Aotea\, protecting them for\nfuture generations.
