Destination Great Barrier Island is a proud partner of Ngāti Rehua and Ngāti Wai ki Aotea. We are a charitable trust and our mission is to facilitate the development of a sustainable tourism approach for Aotea Great Barrier Island. We want visitors to the island to have a rich and authentic experience. At the same time we want to ensure that the island retains its unique character and that its pristine environment is not spoiled by unplanned growth and development.

The Destination Great Barrier Island Trust was formed in March 2013. The original aim of the trust was to “grow the Great Barrier Island economy through growth in tourism”. This aim has changed recently to be one of promoting a sustainable tourism approach so that the island does not lose its authenticity and unique character.

DGBI collaborates with the Aotea Great Barrier Island Local Board and Auckland Unlimited (AU). It is funded by the Local Board to realise the Aotea Great Barrier Island Visitor Strategy via the associated Implementation Plan. Destination Great Barrier Island is also working on a Destination Management Plan, which will guide the Trust’s objectives going forward.

The Trust receives funding from the Aotea Great Barrier Island Local Board and is a member of Tourism Institute Aotearoa.

Trust meetings happen on a monthly basis with an annual general meeting around November/December. The public are welcome to attend these meetings.
